Common Chat Abbreviations, Clearly Explained

A quick reference to familiar chat shorthand, plus a reminder that a simple follow-up question is fine when an abbreviation is new.

Chat abbreviations save typing, but they can make a conversation confusing if you have not seen them before. Meanings can also shift between communities, so it is perfectly fine to ask someone what they meant.

A few common examples

  • BRB — be right back
  • AFK — away from keyboard
  • BTW — by the way
  • IMO — in my opinion
  • IDK — I do not know
  • TTYL — talk to you later
  • G2G / GTG — got to go

Use shorthand when it helps

Abbreviations are most useful when both people understand them. In a new conversation, clear words are often friendlier than a string of initials. Do not assume every acronym has one universal meaning, especially when it could be personal or community-specific.

If a message leaves you puzzled, a simple “What does that stand for?” keeps the conversation moving without pretending you understood.
